TANKER

Almost 2.5 lakh people die of kidney failure in India every year. It is the third largest killer after malignancy and heart disease. Millions suffer from some form of kidney disease and many of them, particularly in India cannot afford the cost of treatment or care. The TamilNad Kidney Research (TANKER) Foundation was founded in 1993 by Dr. Georgi Abraham along with a group of like minded people to address these concerns. The Foundation is a registered, non - profit charitable trust.

A World that ensures good healthcare and medical facilities to all.

Mission

To detect, prevent and raise awareness on kidney ailments and to provide quality, affordable treatment to underprivileged people.

The TANKER (an acronym for Tamilnad Kidney Research) Foundation is a registered, non - profit charitable trust, founded on 30th June 1993. TANKER aims to provide healthcare and financial assistance to those who have kidney problems and do not have the wherewithal to seek medical attention.

TANKER cares for those, the underprivileged, who suffer kidney problems of any kind, reversible or terminal, regardless of caste, creed, sex or religion.

TANKER along with our goodwill ambassador actor Suriya intends setting up dialysis units in other parts of Tamil Nadu.

TANKER with actor Suriya's help aims to take the awareness and screening programme to schools and colleges all over Tamil Nadu.

KNOW YOUR KIDNEYS

The kidneys are a pair of organs located behind the abdominal cavity on each side of the spine. An adult kidney weighs between 125 and 170 g in males and between 115 and 155 g in females. The left kidney is usually slightly larger than the right.

Though the kidneys are part of the urinary system, they have various other important functions. The kidneys receive blood from the renal arteries. They excrete urea and uric acid. They also help maintain pH value by regulating the bicarbonate concentration in our body. The kidneys also help regulate the concentration of substances such as sodium chloride, potassium, urea, glucose, and other ions in blood. The water balance in the blood is also maintained by the Kidneys.

It is a little known fact that the kidneys also help regulate blood pressure. The kidneys secrete a variety of essential hormones, including erythropoietin, calcitriol, and renin. These help stimulate production of red blood cells, intestinal absorption of calcium and regulation of blood pressure respectively. Humans can survive with only one kidney.

There is a higher occurrence of kidney disease in people with high blood pressure and diabetes.

TANKER Dialysis

A person suffering from kidney failure can survive only when he/she undergoes dialysis or a kidney transplantation. Haemodialysis involves the use of an artificial kidney termed "Dialyser", which emulates the functions of a normal kidney. It needs to be done 2-3 times a week and is an expensive process.

The TANKER Foundation has made dialysis affordable for the economically backward using their Subsidised Units listed below. Dialysis in a private hospital costs anywhere between Rs 800 to Rs. 1900. At TANKER, dialysis costs Rs.800 and it is offered at a subsidised rate of Rs. 375 to the patients, with the balance coming from donations. 140 patients benefit from this every month.

Our Dialysis units employ state of the art technology and have RO filtration plants and are fully air conditioned. The dialysis are offered twice a week. TANKER also provides free and subsidised erythropoetin injections that are otherwise prohibitively expensive.

We have also taken the initiative to introduce a dedicated dialysis unit for HIV positive patients, the first of its kind in India.
This is at the Kilpauk Unit and has two machines. TANKER will be setting up dialysis units in Coimbatore and South Madras shortly. Exclusive dialysis machines are also available for HCV positive patients.
