Popular Front of India will observe 6 December the 20th anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition as Anti-Fascist Day throughout the nation. The Front activists will reach out to people on the day conveying the message “Lest WE Forget Babri Masjid” by poster campaigning, distribution of leaflets and public programmes.

A dharna will be held at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on the day demanding to rebuild Babri Masjid and punish the culprits who were responsible for its destruction 20years ago on 6 December 1992. Popular Front chairman E. M. Abdul Rahiman and other leaders will address the dharna.

The Hindutva Fascist forces demolished Babri Masjid, the 463-year-old place of worship of Muslims in Ayodhya. With it, the ideals and values upheld by the Indian nation were also shattered. The Government was a helpless spectator, the laws of the land mere notional writings on paper and the judiciary proved completely ineffective. The demolition was the gravest terrorist attack against independent India after the killing of Mahatma Gandhi. It was the day when India had to hang its head in shame before the entire world community.

By demolishing a Masjid, which was used for worship by Muslims for over 420 years, the Sangh Parivar claimed that they have erased off a stain that had been on India for centuries. It meant that Muslim were nothing but a stain on the body of the republic. Thus, it was not just the demolition of a Masjid, but was part of an agenda to teach the minority Muslim community a lesson. The national wide attacks on Muslims that followed demolition was indicator of their aims in this direction.

Though the main culprits are the leaders of RSS, VHP and BJP, there are many others to be held responsible. The then Prime Minister, the Government of India, the Judiciary, the army, the media, every political party, every leader, all have to share it. They also failed to learn lessons from that tragic incident. Twenty years have passed since then. The immediate assurance given to the nation to rebuild the mosque was a blatant lie that failed to materialize till now. In fact the rebuilding the Masjid and punishing the culprits would only serve justice and restore the faith of millions of upright citizens of India, Muslims and non-Muslims. This was made clear on the days following the demolition by many intellectuals, secular leaders, press and public.


All the following three legal processes on different aspects of the issue are still pending final decision.

1. The case filed in 1961 related to ownership of the Masjid and its premises - After the unjust verdict of the Allahabad High Court to partition the land among three parties, the matter is now before the Supreme Court.

2. The criminal cases filed in 1992 against the culprits responsible for razing of the Masjid - All of the accused roam free without any sense of guilt and fear of punishment.

3. Government action on the report of Justice Liberhan Commission that enquired into the destruction of the Masjid - The UPA Government is not showing political will to take action against those whom the Commission held responsible for the incident.

The Central Secretariat of Popular Front of India has reminded that the asking Muslims to forget Babri Masjid are insult to injury. Along with Muslims, every citizen of this great nation shall not forget Babri Masjid. Forgetting it would only help the growth of communalism and fascism. Our country has witnessed 20 years of betrayal. Popular Front urged that justice which is denied so far cannot be further delayed. The Central Secretariat called upon all Indians to pledge together to strive for justice on this 20th anniversary occasion of the Babri Masjid demolition which was a crime against minority community, humanity and nation.
